Robert Bowling - "Looking to Support Dedicated Servers?

Modern Warfare 3 s Robert Bowling | GameFront

Out at E3, our away team just walked out of a very interesting interview with Infinity Ward?s Robert Bowling. In the course of the 12 minute chat (which we?ll be posting video of as soon as possible, so check back for it), the talk inevitably turned to the topic of support for Modern Warfare 3 players on the PC. Here?s how that went. (Editor: Emphasis is ours)

GameFront: We have a big PC gaming community. Lots of modders, that kind of thing. Are you guys talking at all yet about what sorts of features the PC version of the game will have?

Robert Bowling: In Modern Warfare 3, I?ve been trying to reach out ot our PC guys. We had some of the [PC] guys come out to the studio a few weeks ago. We have them here. We brought them here so they can see the stuff we?re showing off. We?re putting a lot of focus there, to make sure that our PC community has all the bells and whistles. So, the guys that have the powerhouse machines, that they can crank it up and enjoy the game. It?s very important for us on the PC to make sure we have a solid min-spec base?so that the majority of our PC users can enjoy the game out-of-box, run it smooth, exactly how they expect. That?s very key for us. You?d be surprised how that can easily be overlooked. We?re making sure the PC is up and running from day one, and it?s running smooth on min-spec and beyond throughout the entire development process. As you get later on in the development cycle, you get to the point where you start focusing on PC-specific features. It?s the one platform out of Xbox 360, PS3 and PC that has specific things that go only into that version.
That stuff comes a little later. I can?t confirm anything yet, but right now we?re having conversations about dedicated servers, mod tools and post launch support. I can?t give you an answer yet on what will be included. In Modern Warfare 3 we added IWnet, which was all about matchmaking?with the plan to eventually add in dedicated servers. My ideal philosophy on the PC is to have matchmaking for the ?mass.? Have matchmaking for the guys who just want to jump in, hit ?play game? and start playing. But let?s not lose that dedicated core audience that wants the dedicated server experience. We?re looking at ways to incorporate that into Modern Warfare 3. We?ve been listening a lot to our PC guys who have been very vocal since Modern Warfare 2 about what they want to see come back to our versions of the franchise.

GF: So if you had your way, Modern Warfare 3 would have dedicated servers?

Robert Bowling: We?re having those discussions now. I don?t want to confirm, but we?re looking to support that as much as possible.

    __________________________________________________

So, while we can?t 100% confirm that dedicated servers are headed to Modern Warfare 3, it sure looks likely. As you can guess, that makes us pretty happy, especially in light of the extra value that dedicated servers bring to a game.

You can check out the interview in its entirety later today to see Bowling discuss a wide range of topics, including single player, spec-ops, multiplayer, the story, and more.
So I would like to know, who are these "[PC] guys" ? I think its great if they do bring back dedicated servers. I think they became aware the IWnet matchmaking didn't turn out as great as they wanted it to. But I have a feeling its going to have that Blackops version of dedicated servers. They want to maintain some type of control. I mean, if one still looks at Gametracker COD4 top 25 servers, 4 of them are cracked and the #1 spot is a cracked server for a few years now. The same goes for COD World @War with the #1 spot going to a crack server. Anyway... thats another story

The video interview (alot of back ground noise)

One thing that disappointed me if I understand it, They remove the "One Man Army" perk. That was the best perk. I could set up my tent with marshmallows, tell ghost stories and snipe or shoot away. And every once and a while, replace my claymores that went off

"one man army" You are noobier than I remember.

Anyways. Talk is talk. They are gonna have to prove some serious commitment for me to start paying attention to this game again. For now, that gameplay looked like another level in MW2. Nothing special.

Caddys, you see all those buildings in the background in those pics. Try blowin a wall out with a nade launcher and see what happens.

You might accidently die from the lameness but it sure as hell wont kill an enemy on the other side of it. Same game engine for 5 years. Not even trying.

Add that to a console port for the PC and there you have it.

They should have renamed this to" Run and gun with the kiddies."

I really do dream about what it could have been, compared to Cod 4.. that was a game. Everyone thought that they would top it with MW2 but BK nipped it in the bud. Ran off all of the good developers and modders. And proceded to tell all of us to go jump in the lake. No problem, if thats what he wants then Cod from Activision is dead to me.

No problem. Dice and EA picked up the ball and are running with it.

Oh and one other thing. When you talk about Cod being better than MW3, you better damn well make the distinction between game play and Sales. Those are two different animals.

I said it once and I'll say it again, Big Sales does not equate to good gameplay, no matter what the storyline. No one ever argued the fact that Cod sells more. But do the stats and see who plays what. Age demographic will come into play more often than not. Which equates to a bunch of adolescents runnin around thinkin they are L33t.

So.. with that being said. BF3 will always be FTW.

Different games for different people. I like run and gun. I dont care about blowing up walls. Those walls can give me time to reload, heal or cover.

I maybe the only one here that like COD games and thats fine with me. I'm planing to buy BF3 but I can already feel its going to be BFBC2.5 from what the info is already out.

I don't mean to be negative nancy, but I will not buy another COD title again. Everytime I buy it, I am disapointed time and time again. I don't like the "lone wolf" style of play.

                  BF3 FTW.

Funny how PC gamers start to sound like Console kiddies. Don't like COD, don't poke holes in it. It's perfect for what it is. BF might get famous if they do this one right, from my experience with dice so far, it's not gonna happen.

Dont really want Dice to "get famous" with this one. Doing that means making a mediocre, easy and very simple game, filled with glitches. BF is not that, and if it ever is, then they can shove it too.
The problem here is the people buying and playing the games. They are stupid. Not really a matter of opinion, people are just uneducated and unrefined on the subject of games.

If people like it, good for them, but they shouldnt have to pay full price for a sub-standard game. The last two or three CoD games would have made great xbla titles(or expansions for the original MW). Or, game standards shouldnt be based on crap.

Translation, we dont want to pay $60 for a map expansion pack. Or ported games.

These guys got their lessons from Microsoft selling Win7 which is just Vista with all the bugs fixed. Should have just been a service pack. But ole Bill knows that he can sell suntan oil on the dark side of the moon. Just the way it is.

Marketing appeals to the gullible. Those that have half a brain can see cons coming a mile away. But hey, if you have the money, they'll take it. If you're happy, so are they.

Did anyone think to ask why all the original developers and modders at Infinity Ward left Activision.

It all looks like the same game with a different Backdrop....it Screams (re skinned )!!! they have lost my vote maybe just maybe if after it has come out everyone is saying how awesome it is and how they have changed heaps of stuff ( ON PC ONLY) i might think about it .... but all that said i really dont like paying for something that is the same as MW2 for something ridiculously overpriced....
