6pounder, try this, go control panel>performance and maintenance>system>hardware tab>device manager>sound, video and game controller> Unimodem Half-Duplex audio device, and disable it, see if it will go past the black screen, it worked for me, worth a shot. i have XP and Vista machines but the XP was the pain with this.
