That is correct. Find a nice place to hide, and use your air strikes right away. It's an easy way to gather the two additional kills needed for the Heli support. If you don't use your uav/airstrike/heli support, it will still be available after you respawn. If you don't use your air strike and continue on to a 7 kill streak, you gain Heli support but you loose your air strike. Another reason to make sure you use it.

Are these air strikes very damaging. Like how much splash do they do I think when you build up to get something like an airstrike it should be worth it!

If you can time it right and catch alot of the opposing team out in the open in a reasonably close area, it can do alot of damage. Works best if used in conjunction with a UAV to spot high enemy concentrations.
