never understood why they won't do special characters. You would think that this would be an easy addition.

Some do some don't. The Georgia State Dept of Revenue Withholding Site for Businesses does allow special characters. The IRS Business site allows only some not all.

For my work Volvo account I have to have a certain number of special characters or it won't even accept anything.

I saw co-workers always forgetting their passwords after they had to change them. So I use the same password with a number. When they want me to change my password I just increase my number by one. When I'm at 9 and I change I go back down to 1. I think Windows doesn't let you reuse the last 5 passwords, so that solves that.
