    Technical Question

Before anyone answers my question, please give me the technical answers above "its l33t" and " I like it" No offense, but I need evidence that supports a decision.

Some of you know that my father dumped a bunch of hardware on me because he lacks the time to constantly fiddle with his computers.

One of the gifts was an HP tower with an ASUS mobo in it and an E6420 Core DUO in it.

My question is: How do I choose the CORRECT upgrade being that there are so many variations in this particular market segment?

Weird as this may sound, FSB and Cache have never been considerations for me when I have built a PC. But I see the growth in relevance suddenly, but what that relevance is, I am not so sure.....

    Any suggestions?

Well, can you clarify your question a bit? Are you asking what CPU you should put into it? Also, can you provide better specs for the desktop so we know exactly what MoBo, CPU, RAM, HD(s), and other equipment it has?

The most important thing is: what mobo/chipset do you have? That may limit what upgrade options you have.

I got the support team to answer
Freakin E6000 is the top of the line.

Getting this new tank is an improvement over what I run now....how much I wonder though.

I'm running a 3.0 Pentium 4D in the tank right now.

How much will a 2.66 Core Duo give me in terms of a difference?

That Pentium D you have is a single core chip, so going Core 2 gives you a very nice boost. I'm trying to ditch all of my single core rigs for DC, as its obvious to me that the performance loss is noticeable.

The e6420 has plenty of overclocking potential, but you lose that with the HP board. I just dealt with an HP branded Asus board, and Asus washes their hands of ANY OEM board, meaning the ONLY support or drivers for the board come directly from HP. Its like having a Ferrari that you can't shift higher than 3rd gear.

The e6420 chip clocks in at 2.13ghz, which is on the low end, but there's always a chance you could pinmod the CPU for a higher FSB (stock 1033 bumped up to 1333). The key factor to determine is whether the board would support 1333 FSB in the first place (doubtful, but a pinmod can be undone as well if it doesn't work).
