I just read that you can plug the two different devices into the others ports but I thought that the plug was a different shape so this would not be possible. I don't have a USB 3.0 port handy so I was wondering if any of you could verify this.

I have USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports on my computer and USB devices of either style will work in the other. Of course 2.0 will not work at 3.0 speeds.

As said, USB 3.0 devices will work at USB 2.0 ports. Just not with the full speed. From my tests USB 3.0 devices are a bit faster than older devices though.
