    Need advice

So my nVidia GT2 9800 died a few days a go and my friend at nVidia hooked me up with GTX 480. I plugged it in and it ran like crap. Running fraps showed it hovering around 27 FPS. When I initially spawn into a map the fps would drop to 1 for about 15 seconds and then pick up. Changing the graphic settings didn't seem to help. I'm wondering if I'm processor bound in some way. I used to know the PC components but, since I've started networking years ago I haven't really kept up on whats what. Luckily for me theres you guys. So this is what I'm running

EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 ATX Intel Motherboard
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...pk=EVGA%2b790i

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115036

I never needed to overclock any thing before. I realize the system is getting long in the tooth and with BF3 on the way I wanna make sure I'm in a good spot. So I did overclock the FSB on this board and the proc is running 3.7 or so with just basic cooling fans. Overclocking seem to help. the lag of initial map load is now one or two seconds and average fps is 37 to 45. If my MB and proc are dated can you guy's give me a low cost most bang for buck option. Thanks

What FPS were you getting before? It would seem unlikely that you would drop just by changing to better GPU.

Does that CPU have Hyper threading? Be sure to turn it on if it isn't.

Did you sweep the drivers off and reinstall the new ones?

I would post something at the EVGA forums if you don't get any luck here.

Well I never ran fraps before now I did set dx10 in the ini. I guess what I'm trying to figure is first off is my system old enough to be a problem.

I did upgrade the bios, drivers and and DX. no I didn't uninstall or sweep the previous drivers. I will try that next.

What type of PSU are you running ?? That 480 is probably pulling more power than the 9800, so you may be straining the PSU as well.

Not pointing the finger at it so much as making a suggestion that since you are now running OC'd on the CPU you will be pulling more juice from it as well as more from the GPU.

You could install Speedfan and check to see what your +12 rail is running at now.

Mapes, if you have the cash a 2500k system isn't too expensive especially seeing as you have the most expensive part.

That 480 should be doing better than that. Like was said, it could be a voltage problem. That old Duke card I got runs better than that. I'm runnin 1920 x 1080 on medium settings with 2x AA and 2X AF. It's a GTX 275.

I have it clocked a bit but nothing really strained and it gets over 60 with it droppin down to around 45-50 in tough situations.

Now with that said, I have and I7 930 oc'd to 3.8.So I do have more processor. But you got that E85 runnin pretty good at 3.7. So I dont think that could be the problem.

Could also be the drivers. I dont know how old your drivers are but they can dang sure make a difference.

Don't think it's my PSU as this is what I've got

Ok I'll look into drivers. so my proc is not some dying cpu?

                  No, shouldnt be your PSU.

No, shouldnt be, I had an E8400 oc'd to 3.4 and it ran it ok. Had the same Vid card and only 4gb of ram. From Thailand even. Didnt have much problem. I think it ran in the 45 fps range. But, it is still a dual core. I really think the drivers may be holding you back. Install em and see.
