    google redirect virus >:-(

I've got the google redirect virus... redirecing links in search results to useless websites. Malwarebytes scan yesterday removed about 13 things it found... but it is back today and malwarebytes isn't finding anything. I've also cleaned out my hosts file.

Windows Vista with firefox. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Seems to be a common problem with no easy solution that I've found.

I haven't run into anything like that before but whenever I do I run CCleaner. May there are some annoying add ons in your browser?

      Reformat. Install Firefox and no-script.

You know you could just toss all those old parts out and build a new rig.

Thanks, mapes... I didn't think to check that. Just did, all looks fine.

Since my post I've also ran a program named tdsskiller. If found a rouge service and cleaned the file and registry. Rebooted, still same problem.

Also tried another called HitmanPro, didn't find anything.

Bing and yahoo searches work fine, no redirect issues, only with google searches. Driving me nuts.

What was that program Cain linked to way back? It was in the sticky but the link seems to have been removed form it.

                  Obi,

If everything fails and you're considering a PC reformat, try this higher risk tool. (not for casual users)

THanks, Qicmee. I'll try to look into ComboFix tomorrow.

Duke, I think the program you mention is malwarebytes... at least that sticky is where I found out about malwarebytes. In my opinion, one of the best tools out there, surprised it hasn't been able to repair this.

Nope Malware was mentioned in the same thread as ComboFix but it's link was removed, I assume, due to its extreme nature. I think I may have used it on my wifes PC a year or so ago.

                        1) back up bookmarks/profiles
                        2) uninstall FF
                        3) reboot and run ccleaner. make sure you use it to clean up your registry.
4)reboot and run ccleaner again. make note of what (if any thing) shows back up.
5)using another browser DL FF from here: Home of the Mozilla Project
6)install your new FF and any addons. restore bookmarks BU.
                        7)have fun surfing

did you run MBs in safe mode? use safe mode when ever possible when fighting with a nasty virus or malware.

                            +1

This is the only way to get some of it removed properly.

Thanks. I'll try the MB safemode thing this morning before doing anything more drastic.
