I think the key to positioning the video cards depends upon you case and how you set up all the fans. I discovered that when i rotated my CPU fan upward that I improved the flow throughout the case which helped out with the video cards. I also tweaked the fan settings in Precession to have the fans kick in at a lower temp, they get a bit noisier but the gaming temps are much better.

i do not think i have ever used the installation disc. just go update your drivers. make sure you click the use sli box.
