Even though I live in where I do, I got the BIGGEST laugh out of this. Not that they guy is having to go through it but just because the church is doing what the are.

Wow. Kind of crazy if you ask me, but it is a private college (at least I *think* it is, lol) so they can set their own rules and standards.

I read about this recently and thought it was absurd that they should have the power to revoke a diploma.

I don't think they revoked it, I think he went through graduation but hadn't been issued his diploma yet, like they do at most schools where you're giving a holder at the actual ceremony, then get the real thing delivered to you. I think they're just with holding the actual diploma until he apologizes or conforms or whatever.
