So artists want compelling and complete contracts, while retaining the right to act as their own contractors?

That should really drive down the value of their work. I dont see labels paying as much as they do now, as the single point in sum is to lock them into an exclusive relationship.

If the artists retain the rights to the music, there is really no point in paying them such enormous sums.

Your missing the point. Plenty of artists are finding that they do not need the labels for promotion or distribution. Thanks largely to the internet. If artist no longer need the labels the labels are out of a job.
