Not sure I see that actually happening. I know Google has the resources, but why would they invest in a service primarily designed to aid in digital download of games, and creation of the Source games? Google's two PRIMARY businesses are search engine and add revenue, then you can add in all the side projects they have. Which you can tie a lot of advertising in to. I guess you could do that with Steam, and it is done now, but I can't see how Google would be extremely interested, especially as the group who uses Steam nowhere comes near to matching who they can reach just via the internet.

I'd hope that even if Google would acquire Valve, that they'd leave the company basically alone, and treat them as a division within Google.

i don't think they would want to interfere with valve.... they just want the rights to their software.

Steam runs pretty well and is a great vehicle for games. I'm sure google would be looking at diversifying (even more).

There are plenty of other companies that I would hate to see purchase Valve, and google ain't one of them.

I like google's stuff, I think they are a smart company and if they would purchase Valve, good would probably come out of it.
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.

Google's only business is ad revenue everything else is to draw people to the ads. They just do it in a non intrusive way so folks don't mind.

                              They bought YouTube.
They have the largest digital library in the world.
They have that project to document all the books in the world that they can get their hands on digitally.

                              Thats one function.

Now take into consideration the hosted application business they are building.
Business Grade Google Docs, Google Mail, and etc.

Google can essentially do the same thing your MS Exchange server is doing for about half the cost when you eliminate the operational overhead in terms of personnel or days lost that could be allocated to Core Competency business functions (such as improving your products that you sell to your clients).

In terms of Outsourcing, that is the outsourcing of components and applications into a OnDemand environment hosted by a vendor 3rd party, it is very hot in the IT department right now, and this has been going on since before the economy melt down.

I say it makes good sense to me.

                              .
