I've read a ton of Forgotten realms books, and loved them, especially the legend of Drizzt and the Cleric quintet.... Never tried the game

Hmmm I've played DnD since I was 13. Form the Basic set upto and currently 4th ed. I don't find that 4th ed blows. It is different and I've heard people complain about it before. As DnD goes I like 4th for one reason...standardization. I also like the way you can modify your character. However it must be said that I prefer GURPs or other points based systems over DnD. I really like ability to totally customize my character how I want and not be restrained to some stupid preconceived class or a weak ass multi class.....It's off topic ...just my two centsOriginally posted by Rand{CLR} View PostDepends on what edition of D & D he is talking about, and what video games. 4th Edition of D & D absolutely, positively blows. I finally borrowed the three core books recently from the Library, and gave up on a full read in absolute disgust at how poorly designed it was and how obvious Wizards of the Coast was being in trying to squeeze every last dime out of their player base--going go far as to almost require the use of costly miniatures in gameplay (including basing a simple concept such as movement on miniatures squares), and hawking their soon-to-be-pay online service at every chance. Not to mention that all the core books are $40.00 each.
To me Forgotten Realms are content and not a game system. I don't really care about the pre canned content that ships with a RPG systemOriginally posted by Rand{CLR} View PostI'm a fan of the Forgotten Realms because of how rich the world and history were, and they completely gutted it in so many ways it's not funny--including advancing the timeline 100 or so years, killing off more than half the gods in the meantime, summarizing those 100 years in ONE PARAGRAPH where they just posted a 120 page timeline of history last year, smashing two worlds into one (literally), and shortening all the summaries of their major areas into two pages each. Anyone defending 4th edition as better than video games needs to have their heads checked.
Yeah 3.5 was kinda weak in that way. Especially the reduction in Sorcerer spell timesThird edition was a lot better, but I did not like the money grab that was 3.5, released a scant 2-3 years after Version 3. However, Version 2 of the game was spectacular, rich in its options and worlds, built upon a grand history of play, and the high point of the game. A good DM can weave a tale that immerses the players.
I guess the question was "Are video games better than DnD" so I understand why your breaking down video game ratios but, I don't understand this logic. Just because there are lots of shitty games produced doesn't mean you have to waste your time on emMost video games are shear garbage. Maybe 1 in 10 titles is worth something, 1 in 20 are outright good, and 1 in 100 are brilliant. The shear numbers of games released really bring down the overall average. They are often short, they are by and large impossible or extremely difficult to build upon and expand (the modder community only has a selection of games to work with--those with the tools released to work on them--and only so many modders out), and often provide less value for the money than D & D (10 hours for a $50 game far too often).
Hmm lots points in here... some I agree with. I agree that content can get added to DnD much easier. I don't agree withIn terms of being able to impact the world, add to it, expand it, the only thing close to D & D are Muds. From that sense, D & D wins. You're only limited by imagination, and you don't have to decipher complex code. A Class AAA game is better than D & D in almost all ways, and games are easier to pick up, easier to pause, and require fewer players in one spot.
They are completely different... which one is better is subjective. While it is true that video games requires less people to play. It's easier to pause and yes has an easier learning curve I don't think those values alone make video games better. DnD has more going for it in someways than video games. For example In my gaming group there are no annoying 13 year olds. No one spams the chat. If we don't like playing with someone we as players all vote and can perma ban someone(and yes we have). Theres allways an open slot on the "Server" and the number one reason why I say DnD is better than video gamesA Class AAA game is better than D & D in almost all ways, and games are easier to pick up, easier to pause, and require fewer players in one spot.
....I get to hang out with my best friends and drink beer and roll dice...period.
I have a regularly scheduled game every bi-weekly. All of us are married and 4 out of 6 guy's have kids. Without our game I know I would not see these guy's that often....Its the social aspect that makes DnD great.
I tell my wife who is squeamish on DnD that she can tell her friends that I'm going to my regular friday night "poker night" if it makes her feel better.
I agree however I think it comes down to more than the DM but how good your entire gaming group is.In the end, it largely comes down to personal preference and the quality of a video game vs. that of your Dungeon Master. Both are valid forms of entertainment.

DnD wins hands down! There are no limits on what you can do b/c it's all with your imagination and there can always be a new evil to conquer or good, if you're an evil character. Only thing that stops you is your roll!
Video games are great but they are so limited with what you can do. There is always an END, if you will. WoW still has an END. Same with Warhammer, and all those other MMORPG's out there. With DnD, you can base it off in the fantasy realm, present or future. And if you play without a book, that's no problem b/c you guys can make it up as you go as long as your DM (Dungeon Master for you Phantom) is good at it. Hell you can even have themed types of games, such as Halfling characters and such.
I'll play an ok DnD over a great video game anyday b/c I know and love it. Plus, the more alcohol and/or drugs the DM has, the better imagination he/she will have when making your campaign....lol. I'm not endorsing drugs but it does make for a good game in DnD.Dracontius - North America - Summoners - League of Legends Statistics - lolking.net - My LoL stats etc
