The problem with this, is that people who lack enough common sense to treat a firearm properly are also dumb enough to possibly kill somebody else with it on accident...

honestly, I think there should be a course one would have to take before being allowed to own/operate a firearm. One that educates people on how to safely operate a firearm before they can purchase one. This (along with a background check) would keep people who aren't responsible enough to own a firearm from obtaining one untill they gain the proper knowledge.
