There's a few other beginners tutorials on that site i suggest you take a look at.

@Thrash - I agree about the lens flare. But sometimes it can work quite well.

Here's a few more to get that imagination of yours going. And once you start you won't be able to stop. I'm not too good so....

Considering what i've seen people do with PS, i'm not being modest.

Here's a good link for you.

You're not kidding. About a year or so ago, I was fairly active at NSL (National Signature League) and there were some amazing artists there. They've also got a great place you should take a look at, too, since they offer a lot of resources (stocks, renders, C4D's, etc.) and tutorials.

I don't dabble with Photoshop as much as I used to, but you definitely learn how do something different each day.

Oh, I agree. You just don't want a beginner to start using it until they understand how to blend it in, otherwise it looks like a cheap effect, and it is probably the most overused filter on the planet for beginners. You are most definitely not a beginner.

It creates a light source. I used one in my Ironman siggy, except i placed the flare off canvas above his head so that it looked very suttle.

It may look like i've added one to the Muse siggy too. However it is part of the photo i used.

GIMP. It's the closest thing to PS. I've used it once and didn't find it as good. But considering it's free you can't really expect much more.

                        +1

GIMP is great considering it's a free tool. Plus, you can always try it for free and get a feel for what you're doing and then purchase PS later if you feel you need the additional tools.
