I don't carry for protection. I carry for two reasons. One it's friggin handy. I work a data center sometimes. Being able to cut open boxes/straps is very handy. Also if I find cat 5 (not 5e or 6) cables I cut and throw them out.Originally posted by K PhaNTOM View PostI agree. If I would carry anything for protection it would be a pistol, not a knife. What am I going to do? Stab the person aiming a gun in my face?
I'd probably run away like a girl anyways.
The second reason is car accidents happen. People have burned to death because they did not have a knife to cut the seat belt. A serrated is best for this.

It is the best buy for the money and for years Cook's Illustrated rated it the best affordable Chef's Knife. The Grand Prix II is not as good.
I do not carry the Hattori's around. I used to have a Martial Arts School and used them for training. And training with knives is also the best way to learn to defend yourself from knife attacks. How someone holds a knife will tell you instantly whether they are skilled with a knife or are just a fool. And just like everything else, Movies and TVs are better at showing how not to use a knife.Originally posted by Minerva View Postthis is mine

If you fight with a knife think very short sword, not meat cleaver or Ice Pick. Fighting with a knife is speed and agility.

I don't like the handles on them and the bolster is higher then my liking. Used to sell them for a while.
Intersting thing about cermaic knives. They have enough metal mixed in to set off metal detectors.
Of course you can just make a knife out of obsidian and well nothing in the world is sharper(it dulls fast though, and its brittle). Little bit of a learning curve to make one as well. I know someone who was let on a plane with one, also had a working mini bow that could have killed someone and they thought it a toy.
