Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake, tsunami hitting pacific!

The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since records began has hit the country's north-east and triggered a devastating tsunami.

Japanese TV showed cars, ships and buildings swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude quake.

A state of emergency has been declared at a nuclear power plant but officials said there were no radiation leaks.

At least 60 people have been killed by the quake, which struck about 400km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo.

The death toll is expected to rise significantly.

Some reports quote Japanese police as saying 200 to 300 bodies have been found in the port city of Sendai.

The footage the BBC is showing is sometimes hard to watch.

Thanks for the links. I've been channel surfing most of the morning between the different news network.

I love the BBC. I'm running their live feed now since my antiquated work version of IE has trouble with CNN video, and we don't have a digital converter hooked up to our 70" conference call TV.

I'm seeing stuff I've never seen before, like gigantic buildings on fire, floating on top of the tsunami waves.

My thoughts are going out to everyone affected. This has huge potential possible effects. We don't even know what's going on in the oceans and on the sea floor yet.

Youtube vid of the tsunami tearing apart a coastal town - watch as several cars try and speed away from it. Some do not make it:

                        The destruction is absolutely appalling.

Well I caught the news last night before bed and thought hmmm should I go to my accountant tomorrow... his office is at a lower elevation. It turns out that Santa Cruz did get some damage. Apparently the Santa Cruz harbor drained out. Which lowered the level and docks and boats snapped free of mooring lines. When the water came back in it capsized a bunch of boats
