Wow. Pretty amazing encounter. I feel bad for the bison...would have been better off if the bear did catch it, IMO.

If the buffalo made it through the night, he could of made it all together. I don't understand why the park rangers had to put it down. What if the pictures wouldn't have been taken? Nature would of taken it's course.

He might have made it. But with burns being the most painful of wounds, and apparently burns covering most, if not all, of its body...the winter months starting...calories to heal, calories to survive...I don't have a problem with the rangers putting this one down. And, yes, animals have amazing powers of regeneration, as you suggest. Maybe humans shouldn't have intervened...let Darwin decide...not an easy call. Not an easy life in the wild. Hopefully they at least left the carcass in a place where other animals (ie., the bear, the wolves, the coyotes, etc.) could do what they would have been doing to it if the natural course had been taken.
