Chilean miners to be freed tonight, hopefully

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americ...ex.html?hpt=T1

More than 2 months trapped a half mile below the surface. I feel for these poor men: the trauma they've been through is unimaginable. I wish them the best from here on out, and hope that they receive all the help they need to return to normal lives.

I dunno; I'd almost rather stay down there a bit longer than have to ride in that cage thing they have. Did you see how tight that thing is? I can't imagine standing in that thing however long it takes to come up, staring into the deep blackness of a tunnel barely half an inch away.

Well, they've been standing in deep blackness for 2 months now: the ride would be small potatoes. Oh, and I sure wouldn't wait for them to build an escalator!

        That's good news.

I read an article the other day that one of the miners will have both his wife and girlfriend waiting on him when he comes up. He probably volunteered to be the last one out.

All joking aside, these folks have been through something that is difficult to comprehend how we'd handle it. The BBC is running live updates:

This is compelling stuff. There hasn't been a "TELEVISION EVENT" on this scale since probably the "shock and awe" in 2003. I'm wondering if they're trying to make the ones still underground get some rest though. At this rate it may take almost 30 total hours, and on top of their stress and emotions that may be a bit much for staying up.

Course, nobody would be able to sleep, so maybe they can get them some rest soon after the medical tests.

It's great... a very happy ending to a story that could have easily been a tragedy.
