I thought (think) FF7 was very good, but like Rand said, FF3/6 has more of an epic feel to the story. Also, the plot twist in 7 had been done before in Phantasy Star 2. And, I just liked FF1 better because (and as I type these words, I realize I am going to be in the minority, but, what the hell) I felt that there was more freedom. Perhaps too much freedom, as the nameless characters had no backstory and the game was just an exercise in travelling around and killing things without a personalized plot, but I enjoyed not being pulled in a particular direction just to satisfy the angst-filled motivations of the main characters. Also, I never found the party management in 3/6 or 7 to be logical; if I can find 5 people, 6 people, or 76 people ready to take on the world's problems, why can't they come with me at the same time? In the first game it was just four adventurers, and nobody else, so you never had the problem of choosing who would go with you. Starting with 3/6, the game forces you to select who to take with you as if it were some fantasy-style pickup game of soccer. And for the record? Gau was always my benchwarmer.
