Just curious, Ie ven thought of doing this, but would this be copyright infringement even though you crafted it from scratch?

Took a brick of wood , carved it and painted it? Its pretty much a generic design, not like a character such as Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog.

I've got to think that since they are producing and selling plush companion cubes, they've got certain rights to marketing the concept/image of the thing.

Yes, it is copyright infringement. You can't make a model lightsaber and sell it on eBay either (unless you like e-mail from LucasArts that resembles a C&D letter).

Yea, it would be a copyright infringement but I highly doubt that Valve really cares about few random people selling limited amount of hand-made items on eBay. Unless of course those people have their own company which manufactures these things in huge quantities.

That specific design would have to be copyrighted. Maybe the name "Companion Cube" could be trade marked but the design of the cube itself is hardly original to begin with, I could swear I've seen it before.

If you wanted to recreate it I'd use Sculpty.

Yea, I remember, but not all companies are such, well, jerks - for example I know that CCP, the company which created EVE-Online game, didn't mind at all when someone created an extremely well-detailed models of the ships used in that game.

THen I wonder how the "Winghouse" won the case that Hooters brought against them.

WHat Winghouse did they had the same uniform as Hooters oufits, same font of the lettering, but different color outfits.

They had the pictures of celebrities and stuff on their walls as well.

Same "Theme" but Hooters didnt win.
