Airfare Puzzle

I just bought tickets for a vacation to Louisiana in March. I put in the airports ONT to AEX and the dates. Up pops a list of fares. The cheapest fare has me making my return trip from AEX to MEM and then to IAH and then ONT. A more exspensive fare ($600 more) goes from AEX to IAH and then ONT. The airline is charging me less to cart me around an extra 600 miles. Go figure!!??

I hear you man I see some strange connections. When we are about 30 to 20 minutes out we print up a connection list and stick it through the door to the FA. A common weird connection was when people would go from BOS to RDU but they would connect through LGA or JFK. I asked one of these passengers about this and he said it was $100 less. So like you say it's a puzzle.
