Ok, me and my Fiancee' finally disagree on something important--who was the best captain in Star Trek. She likes Picard, while I say Kirk was the MAN! We do both agree that those two are the only ones in the running as JAneway and the others are all forgettable. What is your HO?

Picard all the way. He carried the show on his shoulders for 7 seasons. Besides, Patrick stewart when on to do many high-budget movies (not to mention he's the voice of the king in the game titled Oblivion). But William Shatner is Canadian and he was born right here, in Montreal, and has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University. I guess William should win because anyone who can sell their kidney stone for twenty five thousand dollars should win.

Nelson (1758 - 1805)
Born in Norfolk, Horatio Nelson was the sixth of 11 children. He joined the Navy at age 12, and became a captain at age 20. During this time he saw service in the West Indies, Baltic and Canada. When Britain entered the French Revolutionary Wars it was at the battle of Calvi when he lost the sight in his right eye, and he would later lose his right arm at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. Nelson notoriously fell for Lady Emma Hamilton and although they remained married to others, they had a child, imaginatively called Horatia, in 1801. A legendary strategist, it is perhaps ironic that he never lived to see his greatest victory at Trafalgar; struck by a French sniper's bullet, he died on the first day of battle.
Kirk (2233 - 2293/2371)
As much as any other figure in history, the tall tales about James Tiberius Kirk's exploits over a 40-year career are second to none. Kirk's renown began by becoming the youngest captain in Starfleet to date at 34 and the first captain to bring his starship back relatively intact after a five-year mission to boldly go where no man in a girdle has gone before. Having gained a reputation as a maverick who bucked the system, he famously hung out with a very angry doctor, an unconvincing Scotsman and a bloke with no sense of humour whatsoever. Having been promoted to Admiral, he famously returned to his beloved vessel the Enterprise to complete a few more missions in time for a cup of milky tea and an afternoon nap. Sadly, he perished helping new Captain Jean-Luc Picard save Veridian III from a lunatic known as Dr. Tolian Soran and he is buried in a plain grave on the rocky planet. Admiral Kirk, we salute you!
I guess it would make it Nelson then... :?

Stargate is awesome! I think they may be around quite a bit: Read up on the MMORPG they are making for Stargate! www.stargateworlds.com
It may be too soon to tell how good it will be, but they said that content made for the game will be simultaneously become "Cannon" for the series! That means a nemesis or ship you see in the game can be in the series! It makes me think that since the game still has two years to go that the series has two years at LEAST to go. Bring it on SciFi channel. Bring it on!
Oh yeah and Eureka looks like it could be a good show. We shall see :2thumbs:

Well tigershilone, if it's any help, I think Mr. Stewart did a better job but Mr. Shatner is someone that I can Identify with.
I am not a Starfleet commander, or T.J. Hooker. I don't live on Starship NCC-170, or own a phaser. And I don't know anybody named Bones, Sulu, or Spock. And no, I've never had green alien sex, though I'm sure it would be quite an evening. I speak English and French, not Klingon! I drink Labatt's, not Romulan ale! And when someone says to me 'Live long and prosper', I seriously mean it when I say, 'Get a life'. My doctor's name is not McCoy, it's Ginsberg. And tribbles were puppets, not real animals. PUPPETS! And when I speak, I never, ever talk like every. Word. Is. It's. Own. Sentence. I live in California, but I was raised in Montreal. And yes, I've gone where no man has gone before, but I was in Mexico and her father gave me permission! My name is William Shatner, and I am Canadian!
http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000638/bio
William loves Canadian beer as there are two references of it in that quote.

I picked Picard, but here's something to consider: how come he never got to Admiral during the series? He's flying around for like 7 years in the Flagship of the Federation Fleet, and he's still stuck at Captain. And the true dorks may know this, but I don't: he was flying Enterprise D and E for at least a couple years after the show ended. BTW, the very term "Flagship" comes from naval terminology and means an Admiral is on the ship, has brought his flag with him.
That may not have meant all that much by the beginning of the series, since there seemed to be few ships--A whole what, 40 ships at Wolf 359 against the Borg Cube? But by the end of DS9, there were thousands of Federation ships, and Enterprise was still Flagship. It should not only have been on the front line of the fleet as its most powerful ship, but it should have had at least one and maybe a couple Admirals on board. Aside from that, how did the Federation have so much trouble against the Dominion when they had been building all their new ships to take on Borg Cubes? Bah.
At least with Riker, they explained that he had a bunch of offers for promotion but wanted to stay with Picard. Where's Admiral Jean-Luc at? Even Kirk got to be Admiral, but they busted him down because he's Kirk and can't stay out of trouble. And Sisko got bumped up to Captain. Think the Federation has a French bias? :D

Well, kirk did tell picard in ST: Generations that he should never leave that ship and be an admeral. I think he did follow that. Also admerals in the 24th century seem a bit squeemish and don't prance around on starships all the time. Picard hosted a few admerals and many turned out crooked or hosted some parasite alien.
So I think with Picard's experience he would choose not to be an admeral after what he's been through. He would rather be "out there".

Ah but that was the Part 1 and 2 of "All Good Things" in which Q was helping picard out a bit and had him going forward/backwards in time to fix some temporal anomoly that would destroy humanity. The future which he was shown he also shared with the crew so they could make their own future. Also that series finale still came BEFORE StarTrek:Generations where picard met kirk in the Nexus and had that whole talk about "Don't leave your ship for anything" stuff. So haha! We don't know but I still am convinced he wouldn't!

Hehe, but If you check the show after Picard was assimulated, he visits his brother in France and they have a discussion about how Picard always looks to have the most attention and aims for the highest positions. And the show where he dies because of his failing artificial heart but then Q sends him back to the past to let him change events and prevent his real heart from getting stabed at. At the end of the show he realizes that he doesn't want to be an enson (spelling?) and that he prefers dying than to occupy a lower rank.

He wants to be greater than an ensign, yes, but not necessarily greater than admiral. That and given the amount of time between then and when he talked with kirk he would probably stay captain. That way if he ever encountered an invasion by the empire he could laugh at their faces!
