Cains Lair UT2004 final moments - Were you there ? [Archive]

Just found this in the depths of my pictures folder, it's a screenshot Cain took of the final player count just before he threw the switch and turned the ONS server off leaving many of us homeless, was a sad day but this screenshot always makes me smile :)

That really was a very sad day for me, I hated pulling that server down more than any other before it, or since.

The good news is we moved on to some really cool, fun new games, and have made some fantastic new friends along the way, the bad news is some of our folks didn't want to move to a new game (which I certainly understand), so many drifted away from us.

These days (so far at least) LogicSouth has more bandwidth than they had in those days, so I don't see UT3 going anywhere, for a very, very, very long time !!

I wasn?t able to make it for the final goodbye of the ONS server. But it was the server that really made Cain?s a home for me. I played many many many (and too many) hours of ONS and would have been there if I could of, but something else came up.

I was there in spirit though.

Where have I been? Right here, haven?t gone anywhere. Played BF2 and DOD at Cains. While I played other games on other servers, I still stuck with the community.

Now, looking forward to TF2 and UT3. Not looking forward to having to chose one of them. Need to deal with a system upgrade first though

That was a sad day but probably the best time I ever had too. It felt like the last day of school when there is no real work to be done but you had to be there. I told my wife to go out shopping that day and take the spawn with her. I still had the server in my favorites up until about two weeks ago. UT on the lair was like religion. I was in denial a for a while after that final disconnect.

I never stopped playing but I'm really glad it's back at the lair.

I remember it well... Cain couldn't even get in his own server and called my house so I could tell everyone PRIME ONE LAST TIME !

Sad Day for all of us, but there have been Great Games & Friends moving forward.

I have always said the Cains Lair ONS Crowd was CLASS ACT !! now those CTFers on the other hand :P

I remember it going offline, sitting for a minute... then searching the server browser and going "$%&@!"

I knocked around on SP and KoNA for a bit and that was that for UT2K4 for me.

I was not in the final round only because you left the server up a day longer than you intended. I was in fact on almost the entire 24 hours before hand trying to get in as much Cains Lair UT2k4 as I possibly could before you hit the kill button. I missed the final moments but I did in fact place a few of the "Thanks Cain" spider mines!! That was a real chore!!

So many great times, and friends. Thank God it's all coming back to us now!!

Cain is not running UT2k4/Onslaught. You can post a server name for that SO LONG AS they are not running UT3, TF2, or COD4. If you're not sure, best to continue not to post it.

The rule against outside server advertising is just to keep people from taking our players. It's not meant to be a burden or apply to any game Cain does not run. :2thumbs:

feeling a little nostalgic and decided to google ut2004 - cain's lair. i'm glad i did. those gameplay shots bring back a ton of memories. i loved ut2004 and i loved playing in cain's lair. it stole a lot of hours from me back then, but i wouldn't change a thing. i even snuck in that one shot where blue team is trying to heal the core.

Because nobody plays it now, and those that do have their bookmarked favorites. It wouldn't compete now.
