I also chose other.

I listen to various types of music, mostly centered around rock.
Punk Rock, Metal (various kinds), classic rock (1970's 80's), hard rock, blues, jazz, alternative, ...

I personally don't like rap, gangsta rap or hip hop.

I, too, must choose 'other'. Music involves so many styles and genres that it's difficult to choose a favourite. I can listen to most all styles for a while, but my favourite music comes from the best of each style. If I'm going to like it, it must be done well.

Exceptions:
Country - sort of dislike it out of principle. How many times can your pickup break down, your wife leave you, & your dog run away, leaving you to nurse this here beer and write yet another song about it... and still have something original/worthwhile to say? :D ... understanding that some find the narrative resonates with their lives in some way. But misery gets old...

Hip Hop/Rap - There may be a bit of singing, percussion instruments are used, and one or two muscal instruments might be employed. However, it is more stylized poetry than music. ... Not to say that stylized poetry doesn't require any ability or talent (in its truest form, it does).

I would have to say my favorite Genre is power metal, I'll list a few bands but 98% of the time when I do the people have no idea what I'm talking about. Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, Rhapsody, Symphony X. Anybody else listen to or heard of these guys?

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a little overview of power metal.

"Power metal, as the term is used today, places primary importance on an epic sound, usually at high speeds, primarily due to its speed metal roots, and with catchy melodies. Whereas most rock lyrics focus largely on "the real world" - personal experience, historical incidents, social commentary, etc. - power metal often treats epic, cosmological or metaphysical themes. Many power metal songs draw inspiration from religion, science fiction, mythology, and fantasy, and they tend to be more optimistic than most metal lyrics.

Power metal vocals are generally "clean", as opposed to the growling vocals that characterise death metal, and are delivered by a trained vocalist. Power metal vocalists tend to sing in a high register and often in falsetto. Some singers, such as Hansi K?rsch of Blind Guardian, record multi-layered vocals reminiscent of Queen.

Power metal guitarists and bassists generally play rapid streams of notes, but change chords comparatively slowly, with a harmonic tempo of once per measure or slower. Fast and demanding guitar solos, however, are almost guaranteed.

Power metal drummers generally play with two bass drums for added speed, often playing a constant stream of sixteenth notes with snare drum accents on the beat. Some bands defy this formula, but it is surprisingly universal.

Many bands also play with a keyboardist, but keyboards are not generally a musical focus. A few, such as the Italian band Rhapsody, have also been known to record with more symphonic elements. Rhapsody actually calls their style of music "Hollywood Metal," emphasizing its resemblance to modern film scores." -Wikipedia

wooooo

Basically it's just really fast, really clean sounding, very complex, and always having an "epic" feel to it.

There are so many various genres / classifications for music today.

Off the top of my head along the VERY general rock genre:

hard rock, soft rock, glam rock, alternative rock, britpop, gothic rock, roots, hillbilly, progressive, classical rock, power pop. You can even add to that grunge, new wave, which brings you to emo, electronica...Get into the heavier stuff and you have power metal, speed metal, death metal, industrial. Lean into the ska style and you have regular ska, standard punk, new punk, hardcore punk.

And that is not even 20% of what is out there.

The newest one I heard of is punkabilly. Which is like 1960s style rockabily but with a punk flare.

Its so damn hard to keep up with all these genres, they seem to be ever changing.

I remember in the early 1990s when you had classic rock, hard rock, metal, grunge. Then they had to get creative.

Personally, I've always thought of Symphony X as more of a prog metal a la Dream Theater.
--

Anyways, I love any type of music. (List for easy reading :D )

Electronica (Gavin Castleton, !!!)
Acoustic new-age (Michael Hedges)
Jazz (Miles Davis, Morphine)
Singer/Songwriter (Billy Bragg, Slaid Cleaves)
Indie Rock/Indie Pop (Decemberists, White Stripes)
Grunge (Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots)
Stoner Metal (Kyuss, Grand Magus)
Power Metal (Demons & Wizards, Running Wild)
Scandinavian Metal/Melodeath (Dark Tranquillity, In Flames)
Death/Black Metal (Opeth, Emperor)
Grindcore/Thrash (Pig Destroyer, Cattle Decapitation)
Prog-metal (Dream Theater, Queensryche)
Heavy Metal/Hard Rock (Freak Kitchen, King's X)
Progressive/Album-oriented rock (Pain of Salvation, Ayreon)
Classic Rock (Allman Brothers Band, Led Zep)
Prog-rock (Spock's Beard, Marillion)

Uh, do I have too much time on my hands? Yep.

Yea, they're more progressive then power but considering a good amount of people here have never heard of either I didn't feel like confusing the issue. I also really like Kamelot and Dream Theater.

I have liked U2 since boy came out, my wife listens to country and gospel. I also like hard rock, classic rock, trance, techno, and jungle. I'm an ex raver, and not the "sponsored" raves. I mean the raves back in 92-94 held in old abondoned warehouses in Chitowns seedier neighborhoods.
No more raves for me but man they were a blast... got me hooked on the 100+ BPMS.
