If size matters to you in this area, I have confirmed that you can upgrade the hard drive with no effect on your warranty, except with that part that covers the HDD that you pull out.
In my case, I just upgraded to 160 GB SATA Notebook Drive 7200 from Seagate.
This love with the Darkside began during my recent Lake Tahoe trip, where my father, of all people, showed me his PS3.
Do you know why he bought it? It's the most affordable multimedia platform out there.
He has a 1 Terrabyte External Hard Drive full of music attached, and upgraded the hard drive so that he could have more space for all the extra's.
He also plans to connect his Blu-Ray library to the PS3, which he has already loaded into some kind of server that direct plays the images.
In addition to that, he placed a 70" Sony Bravia in the Main quarters of the house and that is what the PS3 is hooked up to.
Just fiddling with the settings was enough to make me drool. Wifey isnt pleased with me right now, as she wanted the Wii. I told her I subbed Waa in for the Wii, because the PS3 is freaking insane.
I'm still retarding my way through the whole process, but I thought you all might like to know that HDD space will never be a problem with this, so save your money and buy low on this unit.
Backwards compatibility really isnt that important to me- as my PS2 sat dormant in a box until San Andreas came out, and once that was played out, it went back into the box.
This Christmas, the PS2 will be headed to an unfortunately poor child via our Church this year. (minus the GTA Games :D)
I'll throw down my ID as soon as I am network connected.
