A police service has been criticised for using blindingly obvious messages in its campaign posters.

"Don't Commit Crime" is stated on one of Hertfordshire Constabulary's posters - "All fuel must be paid for" has been added on posters at petrol stations.

Language watchdogs the Plain English Campaign said the notices were funny, but an insult to people's intelligence.

Herts police defended the notices saying the obvious was worth stating if it had any impact on crime.

A police spokeswoman said: "We are not saying it is going to stop hardened criminals but it may make someone who is nervous think twice.

"These signs and notices are the opposite of gobbledegook. The 'best' one I have come across was a sign reading 'Caution: Water on road during rain'," a campaign spokesman said.

lol :D

Meh, people just need something to b*tch about. The signs are there to make you think and cautious in certain situations, not as a specific warning in most cases. Buncha whiny buggers need a new hobby.

They should build a small LCD screen into that sign and link it to a closed circuit camera.

ALL FUEL MUST BE PAID FOR, LICENSE PLATE AAA 123. THIS MEANS YOU.

That would probably work pretty good. :D

They don't arrest gas drive-offs here, they just make you go back and pay for the gas.

Round here they'll make you go back the first two times, third time you do it, you get arrested and charged.

So many drive offs, now you MUST pre-pay to get any gas.
Most gas stations profits are pennies these days.
Competition, higher costs, theft, it all adds up to loss of profit.
They are trying to cut down on impulsive behavior that people wouldn't normally do if they thought about it. Kids/Young adults mostly, but who knows.

Sign that says "Slippery when wet" on a hard curve area. MIGHT make someone slow down a little. It isn't an insult, it is just a flash reminder for people who have Way too many things on their minds. I.E. cell phone call, kids in the back seat, your recent conversation with your boss/friend/etc... Information overload. :)

Well I don't really see the problem with pre paying. Seems to solve that problem and no need for any sign.

I am also for road hazards signs...however if you got that much going on perhaps you should pull over before you don't notice me on my motorcycle :|
