Well now Walmart has dropped HD-DVD I think its game over!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080215/tc_nm/walmart_dvd_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) has decided to exclusively sell high-definition DVDs in the Blu-Ray format, dealing what could be a crippling blow to the rival HD DVD technology backed by Toshiba Corp (6502.T).

The move by the world's largest retailer, announced on Friday, caps a disappointing week for HD DVD supporters, who also saw consumer electronics chain Best Buy Co Inc (BBY.N) and online video rental company Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) defect to the Blu-ray camp.

In a statement on its Web site, Wal-Mart said that over the next few months it will phase out sales of HD DVD systems and discs. By June, it will sell only products in the Blu-ray format which was developed by Sony Corp (6758.T).

"We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, a Wal-Mart senior vice president.

The move affects 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in the United States, as well as related online sites. The stores will continue to sell traditional DVD players and movies.

The so-called format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray has been a thorn in the side of retailers, which have had to commit shelf space to devices from both camps even as they field complaints from frustrated and confused customers.

Next-generation DVDs and players, boasting better picture quality and more capacity, were expected to help revive the $24 billion global home DVD market. But Hollywood studios had initially split their alliances between the two camps, meaning only certain films would play on a consumer's DVD machine.

Like the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, having two DVD standards has dampened sales of both and put retailers in a conundrum of having to either choose sides or sell products that have a chance of becoming obsolete very quickly.

The balance of power, however, tipped toward the Sony camp in January after Time Warner Inc's (TWX.N) Warner Bros studio said it would only release high-definition DVDs in Blu-ray format. With that, studios behind some three-quarters of DVDs are backing Blu-ray, although some release in both formats.

Blu-ray also has support from News Corp's (NWSa.N) 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp (LGF.N). Sony's PlayStation 3 game console can also play Blu-ray films.

"So if you bought the HD player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard def movies, and make space for a BD player for your awesome Hi Def experience," Wal-Mart's movie and gaming blogger, Susan Chronister, wrote in a posting.

To be sure, Toshiba has secured agreements with studios including NBC Universal's Universal Pictures, Viacom Inc's(VIAb.N) Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc (DWA.N).

Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Xbox 360 also currently works only with HD DVD. However, Microsoft said in January it could consider supporting Blu-ray technology at consumers' behest.

Toshiba could not be reached to comment on Wal-Mart's move.

Earlier on Friday, the Hollywood Reporter quoted unidentified industry sources as saying Toshiba was widely expected to pull the plug on HD DVD in the coming weeks.

Toshiba spokeswoman Junko Furuta said none of what was reported in the magazine had been decided. She declined to comment further, saying: "We cannot comment on speculation."

Poor HD-DVD...in the last week they've lost Netflix, Best Buy, and now Walmart. Paramount has an option to abandon their deal with HD-DVD as well...I expect to see them take that option within a week.

Once there is just one HD format the players will drop in price and then hopefully the price of movies will follow. As far as region locked it seems up in the air on how studios will handle this since many Blu-Ray movies are region free even though the players are not.

Blu-Ray Region Code Info (http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/)

P.S. There are a few region free imports I would like to get on Blu-Ray (The Island, Starship Troopers and Face-Off) but at ~$40 per disc it's tough to justify right now.

Samsung claims they will be watching the popularity of HD-DVD's now that they've dropped the prices on all their players. I don't see it doing anything for them though.

Even with cheaper HD-DVD players it really comes down to studio support as evidence of the how that $99 Toshiba A2 special last year really didn't sway Warner to commit to one format. IMO all those past BOGO deals on Blu-Ray movies from Amazon, BB and CC probably had a bigger impact since studios see this a direct profit compared to sales from players.

Hopefully I can look forward to some Transformers, Bourne Trilogy, Shrek Trilogy, Heroes and BSG on Blu-Ray in the near future.

The reason why the studios are not behind HD-DVD is because of the region coding and DRM i mentioned in my previous thread. HD-DVD was the start of a really open market. Buy anywhere, play anywhere. You US guys really aren't aware of how stupid it is for the rest of the world. You have things come out on DVD when it hits the cinemas for the rest of us. I pretty much buy all my DVDs from Playusa.com. Not only is it cheaper, but i end up getting the release between 3 and 8 months before it hits our region (2).

Does anybody else find it really sad that it's the studios that are deciding the victor and not the consumer?

And wait! You only pay $40 for a BluRay movie? Up until very recently we were getting charge almost ?30 ($60) for the pleasure of HD. :pissed: Now it's a little better.

Well I really can't comment how this effects outside NA so from my POV having DRM and Region coding on BD players and certain movies is not a big deal since it hasn't stopped me from enjoying Blu-Ray movies. I'm more concerned with having one HD format that can finally take off and in the end translate into lower prices.

Actually I pay far less than $40 for a Blu-Ray movie (only if I want a import) since I usually wait for BOGO deals which makes them on avg about $12-$15 a movie.

I like the irony of this weekend. Analysts are saying that Toshiba stock is actually going to go UP when they officially call it. How messed up is that? You've also got a ton of HD-DVD hard-core enthusiasts running around like angry headless chickens sending "F- you" bombs to everyone who ever expressed the slightest support for Blu-Ray, Toshiba claiming they were going to do this for weeks and that Best Buy and Wal-Mart knew about it before they announced Blu-Ray only support, etc.

I'm laughing inside my head right now. Not because I thought Blu-Ray would win all along (I did), but because my step-mom's jackass step-brother was an HD-DVD supporter, and it's just great to me that he wasted all that money. He owns a small computer company that contracts with the government, but is an idiot on technology matters, and has conned my gullible and stupid father on several occassions, one of which resulted in my first pc being a cheap Acer with sub-standard parts that he overpriced even with a "family discount."

Take that, Larry. :P

I think it was more Sony than anything else. However many million PS3s they've sold isn't very much compared to the other two consoles, but it's a freaking lot of Blu-Ray players.

Actually the PS3 is selling at roughly the same rate as the 360 when comparing the same number of weeks after release so it seems to be right on track with its direct competition...the 360 (Wii is in a totally different price point).

68 Weeks after release date: PS3 vs. 360 (http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&weeks=68)

Just glad the format war is over so I can look forward to spending even more money on movies...:D

HOW YOU LIKE YOUR XBOX 360 NOW!

I read somewhere that Microsoft had a bluray player in mind for the 360.
