tiger woods golf is my faverite game and i hate golf :) but its to fun to play with company.
mariogalaxy is a great sp game
zelda tp is considered 1 of the best game (but i dont care for it)
pool is kinda fun and really cheap as well (got it for 20 bones at target)

wiiplay is cool to add more mini games and get the extra controller.

There is a wireless numbchuck coming out.

Lightsabers are also being worked on.

Zelda is a good renter (no replay value once you beat it).

I second what Premonition said about Tiger Woods. I'm not a big golf fan either, but it's a lot of fun.

Ghost Squad is an arcade rail shooter that is really, really short, but fun and has a lot of unlockables and is only $30.

Raving Rabbids is a good renter (only buy if you have kids). Good humor and good minigames.

Metroid is supposed to be good but I haven't played it myself.

I'm waiting for Mario Kart and maybe Super Smash Bros. The third party titles so far are pretty much a big pile of meh.

Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess are both the best games in their respective series. If you've played any of the others, you'll know that means something.

He's already got Wii Play from the sound of it ("9 games for the extra controller").

For families, Super Monkey Ball is fun. There's another multi-games game out there that's about 20 bucks that could be interesting, has stuff like darts and a top-down view air hockey.

Avoid The Bigs. The control scheme is terrible for that one.

Don't forget about Virtual Console. There's some great games available on that thing.
