I am having trouble with my sewer system its an old system that is not up to code. The person who fixed up this house prior to us buying it ran 2" pipe that goes about 430' to the public sewer. The deal was that when the time came I would put in the pumping station. I had some guy come out to look at everything and his plan is to put in a plastic tank as opposed to a concrete one. He said the only disadvantage is that you can't drive over it. Has anyone else here ever had to deal with this? Any other insight would be appreciated.

Looks like you have a lot of crap on your hands.

I have not seen the plastic tanks before. Its about time they came out with one. Hope its cheaper then the concrete ones. :?
#1 why is he wonting to change out your old tank?
Sludge pumps are not that bad to put in.

I wish I had a tank all we have is some sort of dry well. This is an old house and about 10 or so years ago the owner was fixing it up for rental and he ad some of his guys come in an secretly put this thing in. We are of 40+ feet of "Delta Sand" so it worked out OK. Now its time for a tank.

The plastic ones are supposed to be cheaper and easier to install.

Hey Duke

You have a 2" Waste Line that runs over 400' to the main line sewer ??
If so, you must have a grinder pump installed already and whats its condition and location...

2" is grossly undersized for a house waste line at any length.

To answer the question of plastic tank, when the earth cleanses itself, as it does every million or so years, it will still have plastic !!!
New name will be " Earth + Plastic " Plastic is forever, and you should NEVER drive over any RESIDENTIAL waste system, plastic or concrete.

How is the grade out towards the city sewer, is it lower then your current line ( gravity fed ) or needs to be pumped.

I'm not proud of it, but waste water was part of my job description down in NYC. :P

Thanks for the reply VITO.

I think my current system is just a hole in the ground surrounded by bricks and covered with wooden planks. When the guy subdivided this area he had to put in two 2" pipes that go up hill about 4' over the length of the pipe.

One of the pipes goes to a single pumping station that is shared by my two neighbors. These houses were built about six years ago and they haven't had any problems. The other pipe was to got to my house but because of a battle with an old neighbor he was unable to get the pipe to my lot. My pipe would need to be about 100' longer then my neighbors.

The guy did say something about a grinder and a pump that would go into this tank.

Here are some simple examples of grinder set-ups...

This will cost you a few bucks, I would budget $ 3,000 for a quality system. Without installation BUT that is NYC Style pricing.

We do manufacture larger municiple pump/lift station valves, I will call a few of my suppliers to get some pricing, unless your confident that your local contractor guys are capable.

Get the pump info on what the contractor is proposing to supply.
and call my cell.

perhaps if you just chew your food mroe you wont need this grinder pump.
Ever try an all soup diet?

ok, humor is over, 2" is way small. i am pretty sure code in almost every city is 4". Bawoosh, now thats a mans flush!

The code here is 4" for gravity and 2" for pumping this ground up stuff and from talking to a few people around it is quite common.

I have run to a bit of a problem though. The town wants me to have an engineer sign it of and I thought that was already done. I am going to have some guy come over and look at my current system and see if I really need to go through all this stuff. If I can hold out another year I can hook on to the new sewer they will be putting when the construct the new neighborhood next to my property.

Your right, normal sewer service is 4" but lets not forget Duke is in Vermont where its actually still legal to walk around naked  so who knows.

That was until an elderly women started walking around naked which caused the town to get an ordinance to stop it.

If you want to submit a nice autocad drawing, e-mail the dimensions and some basic elevations and I will gladly draw it up for you real professional like !!!

When I did my pool, deck and fence they handed me the permit right there and then after seeing the autocad layout. Municipal folks just love that crap.

They also required an engineer stamp, but didn't even check it.
Needing a engineer stamp is a load of crap in most towns. Depending on the job.

 and if you can hold on for another year thats the way to go !!

Approx how far will the new sewer line be from the front of your house ??

Well here is a sewer update. It looks like I can wait a bit before I need to drop $5300.00 on a new sewer pumping station. I was told by a neighbor that I had a dry well that consisted of concrete blocks and railroad ties. I was finally able to get a guy to come out here and probe the ground to find my sewage system. He was able to find a large square concrete tank that is about 8' x 10". He told me to dig in the middle and work my way to the edge until I found the cover. I was able to dig right on top of the cover. :jam:

I have never been so happy to see a smelly concrete circle in my life. They will be by to pump it out later today.
