View Full Version : question holes in the ground?
Premonition
24th Jul 2007, 11:41 AM
I clearly have something thats digging underground. Small holes but it weakens the goruns so it sinks. I moved my trash can today and noticed 3 holes under the trashcan.
Has anyone had issue with critters digging? Snakes and rabbits squirrels are common where i live.
Anyone have any ideas how to stop them from digging?

its probably moles from the sound of it. if you buy a mole trap, and place it over the run, it usually works rather well.

Moles or shrews. I think shrews are more common than moles in most of the states. Everyone just calls them moles when they see them.

whats a shrew :?
Cool i might try the mole traps. The holes are kinda small but well defined round. You can see where the ground makes a tunnel and its spread out accross the year. Ive noticed weak spots in the ground that just sink and other spots where the ground has been weakened.

Moles don't leave a hole as such more a mound of earth so a shrew sounds favourable.

Shrew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrew)
These are indeed the most common. "removed" the same way though.

To rid yourself of gophers you need a Carl.

You can buy this thing at most HW stores. It fits over your car exhaust then you screw a garden hose into it and feed that into the hole. Then fire it up...instant mole holocaust

I actually have a problem with "pocket gophers" which are very common here in AZ. Especially on base. What I ended up doing was sticking a hose down into the tunnel, and turning the water on nice and slow, flooded him out after about 4 hours of letting the water run. Also flooded the dead yard, which is now nice and green. After I did that, I made sure he didn't come back by spraying gopher repellant all over the outside edges of the yard. Ran me about $20 total after the water bill and everything, and I didn't even kill them.

seiko you should be promoted. If only your bosses could learn from your softer approach to resolving a problem. :D

seiko can you link me to the stuff you used?
I first noticed little holes... now its out of control. I notice patches of yard with mounds of dirt (size of my hand)popping up and the ground is weekended around that area. These little bastages are gonna really get on my nurves.

If you have grubs in the lawn ( yellow brown patches ), all you need to do is treat them, and the shrew, mole, vole or what ever is using them as a food source will simply move on.
Do you like your neighbors ?!? if not, treat for the grubs, the critters will move next door

How is the hole problem going? Any updates?
Premonition
6th Aug 2007, 02:18 PM
nope... still there and persistent as ever. We have a dog and dont wanna put poison out to kill it. We will probably go with traps. We do have like 2 small patchs of yellow grass so that might be a food source.
We will probably do the worms baits...

We used to use Diesel fuel on the farm but thats a farm if u live in town not recommend.I'd just bait em out with some tassty morsels and assainate e with the 22 with some sub sonic rounds. :2thumbs: There's many ways to silence a 22 if u live in town. :D

I thought you guys might like that or just be like "wow, ill never get bored at home again!"
try geting a solar powered ultrasonic system...im not sure if name is correct but the easy thing is you just put in the middle of your yard and it will send out a ultrasonic wave that will drive away those little vermin peascefully. you'll be really happy that you got one but your neighbors wont be happy with their yards geting torn up now. b/c you drove the vermin into their yards...hehe little devil u! co worker told me this is the best way! he had big trouble with Moles, Shrews, Gophers, and other small vermin. did the trick real fast! have fun and only costs like $30.

That's probably quite easy to do as long as you run energy efficient hardware.
Might look into that. :D

Already done. its a fairly simple process. one of the many things i've done with my EPIA M10000. all thats needed is an 80w solarpanel from Harbor tool & frieght(mines currently in use at my father in law's trailer) and a deep cycle marine battery. unless its running full tilt, it uses 22w @ idle, with another 6w for the ps1 screen :) very little down time.
Cons: its huge & heavy and unreliable. the 3 solarpanels in the kit wind up being about 3ftx3ft. the battery is god aweful heavy of course. however, its needed for reliability. Because of the fact you don't get 100% sunlight ALL day EVERY day, the 80w panels aren't always putting out 80w @ 15v. somedays are better than others. 11a-3pm is usually the most potent solar energy times. after that and before that it falls off. so, you need to quick charge the battery with more than the pc uses.
Pros: its fun to think of what you can do with low power computers!
