View Full Version : Mustard On Hamburgers

Vito's poll on pop-tarts had me thinking. Where I'm from (Long Island) most fast food establishments don't put mustard on their hamburgers unless you ask for it. Where I live now (Florida) everyplace automatically puts mustard on, unless you ask them not to.

I was curious as to how many folks like mustard on their hamburgers.

I used to like mustard of hamburgers as a little one but once I got older I found it overpowered the rest of the burger.

Do I know you? There aren't that many people I know who call me that...could just be coincidence.

so.

Ketchup
Mustard
Horse Radish
red bull BBQ sauce
hot peppers
pickles

no lettuce/tomato. my theory is I like to be able to get my mouth around it. And i Like it spicy ;)

Add some lettuce and tomatoes, and turn it into a Portabello Mushroom burger, and that'd be one kickass "burger."

we have canine teeth for a reason. They were developed to strip flesh from bone. If god didn't want us to eat meat, we'd have a full mouth of molars and whatever those front teeth are. bicuspits or something?

Regardless. god wants us to eat meat. And boy oh boy. Do I exercise my right to do so. Hamburgers = best food in the world.

Mind you, home made ones on the BBQ. none of this fast food crap. Which I can't eat anyway.

I like my burgers with:

ketchup
mayonaise
dijon mustard
relish
pickle
tomato

So I voted yes in the poll.

However, fast food burgers (which I try and avoid like the plague but end up eating them once in a while), I just take them as they come. Takes the fast out of fast food if you ask them to change the slop they are putting on your tray.

House burgers are the way to go!

Uh yah, our canine teeth sure are sharp ain't they. Sharp enough to chase down our prey and rip it to shreds.

Dijon mustard is far better than that super-processed nuclear-yellow crap! Any mustard with some of the seed bran in it still is better tasting IMO. It's far less likely to overpower the taste of the food.

My favorite burger:

Grilled Hamburgers with Garlic, Chipotles, and Scallions

3 medium cloves of garlic , unpeeled
1 tablespoon chipotle chile en adobo minced
2 tablespoons minced scallions
1 1/2 pounds 80 percent lean ground chuck
1 teaspoon table salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
vegetable oil for oiling grill rack
4 buns and desired topppings

1. Toast unpeeled garlic cloves in small dry skillet over medium heat, shaking pan occasionally, until fragrant and color deepens slightly, about 8 minutes. When cool enough to handle, peel and mince cloves.

2. Ignite about 6 quarts (1 large chimney or about 6 pounds) charcoal and burn until coals are completely covered with thin coating of light gray ash, 20 to 30 minutes. Spread coals evenly over grill bottom, position grill rack above the coals, and heat until medium-hot (you can hold your hand 5 inches above grill surface for no longer than 3 or 4 seconds).

3. Meanwhile, break up ground chuck with your hands in medium bowl. Sprinkle garlic, chipotle chile en adobo, scallions, salt, and pepper over meat; toss lightly with hands to distribute seasonings. Divide meat into four 6-ounce portions. Gently toss one portion of meat back and forth between hands to form loose ball. Lightly flatten into patty 3/4-inch thick and about 4 1/2-inches in diameter. Gently press center of patty down until about 1/2-inch thick, creating a slight depression in each patty; repeat with remaining portions of meat.

4. Scrape hot grill rack clean with wire brush. Lightly dip wadded paper towels in vegetable oil; holding wad with tongs, wipe grill rack. Grill patties, uncovered, without pressing down on them, until well seared on first side, about 2 1/2 minutes. Flip burgers with metal barbecue spatula; continue grilling about 2 minutes for rare, 2 1/2 minutes for medium-rare, or 3 minutes for medium. Serve immediately.

A hamburger needs but six items:

Bun
Good ground beef
Bacon
Cheese
Lettuce
Mayo

That's one good burger. I hate mustard and ketchup. Here's a tip: My dad often would mix in a package of onion soup mix into the ground beef to help extend/fill/flavor it. Try it, then grill them up. They become damn good.

-Rand

P.S. before we get a new poll, I like my hot dogs plain. I want to taste the hot dog and all the yummy, unnatural ingredients mixed inside, not spoil it with other tastes. Plus there's that whole "hate mustard and ketchup thing" and mayo just isn't right on a hot dog.

No Tomatos or Mushrooms, pretty much everything else is fair game. :)
I prefer ground sirloin for the meat, its much leaner and tastes better to me.

Mustard all the way, but not that turdy stuff that leaks out of bottles and sacks. I mean the real deal, ground and roasted in EVOO with some BAM! (thats gaaaahlic for all you uninitiated ppl) Add some sauteed fresh green thai chilli, basil, onions and peppers and mmm...mmm ...

Now thats how you make a nukular burger

i dont mind mustard, but if i make them myself i dont put it on. the end of the line burger consists of 1/4 burger bacon cheese, pickle chips, ketchup, tomato and onion. stack it nice and tall, the squash it down and eat.

If it's a fast food burger, it's gotta be a Culvers Bacon double cheese burger with a little mayo and salt. Off the grill at home, cheese, onion, crisp green lettuce, a slice of tomato, a little mayo, and a toasted kaiser roll. time to start the grill.

I dont eat meat either. I forbid my kids to eat it as well. My wife is totally a Vegan. When I did eat chicken (Skinned and Boneless) a few years back, I put ketchup on it.
When I did eat Burgers as a child--it was both Ketchup and Mustard.

Ok well you started my type of thread... FOOOD>>>>> wahoo. But i must warn you I cook alot and used to do it for 9 years as a profession.

Now if you really want a good burger with a little pizaz try putting in about 10% lamb or vension. Use a brioche bun(toasted). tomato, and yes KETCHUP. PS salt and FRESH cracked pepper go a long way.
