How's the game so far, peeps? I can't play until I get home tonight. Off work in 2 hours from this message. Be sure to add me on Steam if you not already have me. Search for pqchadd, that name is my profile name, so it should be my profile.

Well there are a few things I dont like about it so far....
-There is no option to go Prone (not even Snipers) which is GHEY!!
-No way of getting more ammo when you spend it all unless you pick up dead guys kit (I was sniping in hills ran out of ammo, had to run in town and fight with my pistol) I got 15 kill streak though before I had to use pistol :D
-you need to paly with the Video settings a bit...it ran choppy for me at first but then I got it up there running smooth

Ok, lots not to like:
I haven't figured out how to keep the scope up when sniping. Makes it almost impossible to tell where your shots go. Any help? Anyone?
No prone=lame.
Squads seem a bit, well, stupid now. I didn't notice a key for squad commands, but I'm going to look again.
It takes a lot of force to destroy terrain. Nading boxes? Good luck.
No exhaustion--in other words, unlimited sprint/run. Too simplistic.
Incredible inaccuracy of early weapons. But that's not unique I guess. Same seems to apply to mounted weapons though.
They need to get VOIP working, and need to tweak text chat. It is VERY hard to chat in this game. I think you need to hold the key an inordinate amount of time to get the typing prompts, and hold it again to send. Annoying.
Knifing is spotty. They'll probably fix this. But it also looks lame--try it. You're throwing your whole arm out in front of your body like you were zapped with a stun gun.
Poor mounted weapon location. I found one spot where the mullion (in other words, the division of glass) in a window completely blocks about a 30 degree arc smack in front of a mounted MG in the second floor. It's actually more funny than anything.
There may be an inbalance in vehicles, but I need to give that one more time. Better TOW locations and vehicle selection may help too. This map has a very strange progression thing going on with different vehicle spawns, and the vehicles are not balanced per side. Anyway, it's hard to take down a tank. I only died once, when the lag spikes the Beta guys are already aware of caught me. While tanking and attacking tanks on foot, I see a TOW only does 30% tops to the front plate. RPGs are much worse. The Bradley main gun position absolutely sucks--four-round 20mm burst before you overheat, and no access to Bradley TOWs. The secondary MG in the thing is actually far more useful. The AA vehicle has a very fast overheat also.
I'll give it more time, but it's nowhere near as good as even 2142, which was clearly inferior to BF2 and BF1942.

I think that sleeping on it, I figured out the element that had been bothering me as sort of a background piece: even with an expansion of the point of view, it's still too narrow. There is nothing approximating peripheral vision, and it's pretty constrained overall.
I never worry about this with other games, as I always go with the default, so it never became a conscious thought last night. However, it's clearly different from other shooters.

It's been pretty good. Although the map is quite terrible, the gameplay is fast-paced and fun...just don't expect this to be the sequel to BF2 - it's nothing like it. The weapons feel very big, clunky and inaccurate and the mouse lag is terrible.
Vehicles are pretty good but aircraft feel way too simple and don't last long in the air. It's great that the bushmaster on the bradley only fires a couple round bursts and not full auto - more realistic (and you get the TOWs with a gadget thing, Rand). One thing that I am in love with is the sound engine, it's sooo amazing!
Performance is pretty awesome too for the amount of stuff going on. Using an e8400 @ 3,8 and a 9800 GTX OCd with settings on high plus ambient occlusion I am getting 0 chop whatsoever, even in intense firefights. Probably in the realm of 35-50 FPS.
I am pleased so far but they have quite a bit of stuff to work on.

here are a few comments after playing a bit and most of the time has been setting up my controls.
I can't comment on performance because I'm on my laptop on a crappy connection so I will hold off until I get home and fire up the vasectomator.
The deal breaker for me will be the lack of in game voip, if this doesn't get fixed I will probably cancel my order. Voip can make a huge difference in the squad play which can make up for areas that the game lacks in. I hope thaey make this a top priority.
I also seem to get mouse lag when entering a combat situation. If I Rt mouse click when I'm alone I zoom in quickly if I try to zoom in on an enemy then it seems like I have to hold the mouse button down longer.
I like the spotting although I seem to be the only one using it.
The game menu seems a bit odd but I can't put my finger on why.
I would also like to see some advanced video setting options so i can squeeze the most out of laptop video card. Certain effects turned way down means that I can run some others higher and get an overall better experience.
Two things that hurt UT3 were the lack of VOIP and the crappy console like UI so I fear this game could go that way. :(

If this isn't the next latest and greatest, i'd be oh so disappointed..

Found something I actually like: you can spawn on ANY squad member, anywhere. But squads are limited to 4 men now.
New problem too--movement is totally borked. A lot of people tonight, myself among them, started getting stuck moving in different directions. Have to double-tap that directional key to stop. It's an interesting bug.
I need to set up the spot key. I currently have it down because I'm having general problems with binding--especially mouse binds. It's terrible at picking up the proper axis.
And just so everyone knows, it does not appear in-game friending works. Vile and Fiery both sent me requests, but they never showed up on my end.
After two days, I would like to cancel my preorder, but if Cain runs it I'll probably follow the gang. But with the amount of minor bugs combined with several significant issues as Duke points out, I'd rather have my money back at the moment.

I still have to marvel at those who are always so optimistic at betas. I just have a more "glass half empty" view. When so many things are so off, I tend to believe that it leans more towards conscious choice than tweakable goodness.
Think of it this way--do you guys remember when X:Men Origins Wolverine came out, and it was leaked a month before hand? And how the studio was all like "uh, that's not the finished movie. It'll be a lot different." And it wasn't? Yeah, that's kinda how I view most betas. Especially when overseen by EA...
Caddy, tell us more about this beta patch. If they are actively working to fix the major stuff, there is still some hope, but nothing happened when I just opened both steam and the beta app/login.
As much as I disliked the Star Trek Online beta gameplay, I will certainly give their development team props for their quick actions and responses. I'd like to say the same for DICE here. :2thumbs:

You dont need even steam. At this moment you cannot join friends trough steam. But there is inetrnal friends finder, that is not working at the moment. I guess they'll fix it.
So long i love the game. Its much more difficult then MW2. I had no problems to play with group of 8 friends for hours compared to MW2. The one thing i didnt like is missing of prone. About VOIP , i hear some people talking but i cant figre it out how they do it.
The game is tipical BF game.

If they trying to show off video they couldn't have picked a worse map.
Sound engine is awesome. Watching someone knock down a tree was very cool, but then lag struck and it yo-yoed up and down a few times, sort of lost the wow factor.
Hate the new UI. Watched someone land a helo right beside a building and the blades of the helo were running though the blades.
So far, for me, more to dislike than to like.
Hope it improves a lot.

Tracer dart = complete awesome.
Game is still getting opinions as if it were the sequel to BF2. Would love to see some conquest mode added... although the gameplay is very fast paced for rush mode, it would be nice to see how it handles in that game type.

See Jenan, that's the problem. Those of us who have been playing Battlefield since the 1942 game WANT and expect it to be closer to BF2 than to the consolized Bad Company. It's just not a "Battlefield" game without certain aspects to it, many of which are currently not in the beta.
I would expect tracer darts to be far more useful when people pick up heat-seeking missiles. The RPG just won't do the job.
By the by, if you want to kill a tank, go Recon and get the Mortar. That thing is both insanely accurate, and insanely deadly. It's the one thing that takes out a tank rather quickly, which is really bogus because mortars aren't quite so accurate in real life, and it takes a luck shot to kill a real tank. Disable? maybe. Kill? Need luck. Right now the mortar is overpowered.

I was curious what you guys would think. Quite negative overall, which is disappointing...
I personally find a lot to love in this over TF2 and MW2. My first entry into the BF series was 2142, so I suppose I'm more forgiving when the franchise trends away from their heritage. While I share some of your concerns, I must admit I'm really not having any of the technical problems... My scope works fine, I did pretty OK in the helos, mowing down trees in the tanks is great...
Anyway, here's a short list of my favorite things:
1) You have to think a bit... The environment is tough, and so it takes some getting used to. It's less of a run-and-gun than MW2, but there's a sense of accomplishment in developing the skills to be successful.
2) I like rush/this map. I like the large maps in 2142, but I it meant that the action was spread out, and you could spend a lot of time going from one area to the other... This map is quite large, but it's broken down into stages so you're always in the thick of it. I'm sure there will be bigger conquest maps, but I do like this mode.
3) I finally like getting points for being a good spotter. It always bugged me how they called it 'recon', but I got no points for scouting ahead and finding targets.
3) Destroying everything. It's way more than a cheap trick. It really adds to the atmosphere of the game.
It's probably quite a bit different from what people were expecting, but for me the atmosphere just really works better and feels more like a chaotic battlefield.
And lastly, as a sniper I do miss prone, but I am SO tired of having my legs shot off, I can deal. There is plenty of crouch-level cover available.

In the begining, I did had mix feelings. After the first beta patch on the 2nd day and playing this for a while. It grown on me :D I do wish snipers have more ammo lol. There is alot of places to hide. I like the effects of the engineer as he is repairing a vehicle. you see sparks flying lol
I think in a day or two their will be another patch. On of the developers just tweet something about expanding the FOV :2thumbs:
As we know right now, you can't see the server ping's but if you have a G15 keyboard, you can see the ping in the keyboard LCD display.
I had a BF2 moment; I found the enemy van put two C4's in the front and drove untill I got to enemy attack heli and rammed it. The pilot and gunner was just about to take off, I thrown it off course since they just got off the ground and well... I took them out along with me too. I can imagine they were upset on their end of the PC lol

VOIP works for me Duke
You are one of the very, very few. It's been intentionally disabled because of an open sound bug, so the fact that it works for you is probably another bug.
The lack of voip isn't the only issue here, by any means. I'm going to cancel my pre-order shortly.
I didn't do it yesterday only because when I dl'ed the beta client from file planet to give the beta a bit more time in case it changes with patches, it referred back to the files already on my system, including the Steam beta key. I'm wondering what would happen if I get Steam to pull the pre-order. Worst case is that for some strange reason it won't let the fileplanet version work even if I purge my system of the other files, but I will probably try it anyway.
By the way, if the vehicle listing in the customization/stats area is fully accurate, it looks like the game has no jets. I'm a fan of this, considering how overpowered jets became with good pilots in BF2. They never did find an acceptable balance to them, and continued to do poor jobs of AA coding.

Really the lack of prone makes the gameplay move along at a faster pace (besides the handy sprint) which is a good thing when dealing w/ lower player counts. Besides there's so much cover or potential cover (from destroying stuff) that sniper recons are still deadly...and yea no silly prone diving too...:p
Some tips I picked up from the PS3 beta:
*Spot, Spot and Spot again...it's one of the most useful things in BC2 and you can rack up plenty of points doing it if the team can kill off those detected. This is especially true for recon snipers since they are only going to rack up so many points by kills. Plus the recon has access to the 12x scope unlock which makes spotting faster besides getting the huge zoom.
*Health, Ammo, C4, AT Mines all stay for a bit after the solider is killed so keep the squad constantly supplied if your Assault or Medic or grenade/shoot the C4 and AT Mines if they are serving a role still.
*The basic RPG is the only weapon to work w/ tracer darts so far since the other AT weapons are already guided. Still once you achieve lock on w/ the RPG (takes a few seconds while the crosshair is over the tagged target) you can practically fire it backwards if there's enough range and the missile w/ find the target. This can be quite funny if the dart was on a enemy solider...:D
*To take out armor the best method is still C4...plant all the charges and boom...sneaking up is the trick. Mortar Strikes can take out a tank but only if the driver is clueless and decides not to move. RPG's are effective but need multiple Engys all hitting the tank if your facing the front armor. From the rear it takes two RPG hits assuming there's no unlocks. There is AT Mines but it usually requires armor to run over two mines and at a certain speed. With other armor just one mine is required or in a pinch you just set them off by shooting them.
*Besides putting C4 on friendly Jeeps or ATV's and having the passenger the one to detonate you can also put them on the UAV which can be quite funny at times when it sneaks up for the boom-kill.
*For snipers that need more ammo there's an unlock that will add more bullets but really the best case is to have someone play Assault in your squad and they stick by as you move from cover to cover. They get points for ammo supplies while guarding your campfire from "evil-doers"...
*For taking down buildings C4 is really good besides other high power strikes like tanks, mortar strikes, UAV guided missile, ect. If you want to knock out a section of wall the grenade launcher and grenades are very effective or in a pinch the Engy can use the repair tool.
*Crates can be damaged and destroyed instead of just going for the arming charge but they absorb lots of damage so C4 (takes 9 charges) or UAV guided missile (it was 6 direct hits) can do the job otherwise lots of tank shells. The last method is to collapse the building if it has an crate inside. Usually it takes lots of C4 or other high powered strikes to collapse a crate building but it's nice when it goes down w/ a few campers inside...
*Recons are equipped w/ one of the most effective combos for going after crates. The key is getting to the crate as fast as possible before the enemy can establish a real defense...so grab the ATV!
1. Throw a motion mine as you near the crate just in case of lone defenders.
2. Plant all your C4 on the crate if it's undefended otherwise take out any defenders if possible.
3. Arm the crate charge and hide somewhere hopefully out of C4 range.
4. Watch the minimap for anyone coming to disarm and once they get close detonate the C4.
Either way you damage the crate and maybe bought enought time for it to detonate via the arming charge...win-win situation.
Note: Don't forget the Engy can repair a damage crate w/ the repair tool so keep trying to C4 the crate.
Last, BC2 is supposed to be about fast and fun w/ run and gun so if you need more realism then this shooter might not be your cup of tea thus I always try the demo or beta before putting down the cash. Besides BC2 has given every platform one chance to try the game out via a beta or demo which is pretty nice in my book.

Its a motion sensor. Kinda like a disposable radar. you throw it and it tells you if there are enemies in the surounding area of the ball. It can be usefull if you are trying to go around a cornor. Or here is a good tip:
1. Plant your C4 next to an objective
2. Haul butt
3. Throw your recon ball towards the objective
4. Check your radar for enemies
5. No enemies in sight: Throw your second recon ball
6. Detect 3 enemies
7. Detonate your C4
8. Enjoy

Not at all true in the pc version. Mortars are so accurate and so powerful that I'm usually hit dead on with the first to fall, and it does so much damage I can't get away from the rest before they take out the tank. Then when I bail out and am on foot, they don't do a bloody thing to me. Stupid mortars. :|
I found out last night a point blank TOW to the rear of a tank won't kill it.
AT mines right now are quite lame. Shooting them to set them off, while probably more realistic, makes them just about useless.
Pace, the little ball is a sensor. It's supposed to pick up enemies and tag them. It hasn't worked for me yet, but I'm starting to toss more near the objectives just to see if it does work.

Then when I bail out and am on foot, they don't do a bloody thing to me. Stupid mortars. :|

I think it may had to do with Dice raised the mortar damage after the PS3 beta
The Mortar Strike is now called in via a pair of binoculars.
Lowered the number of shells in the Mortar Strike barrage, but raised the damage of each shell.
Raised the effectiveness of the Mortar Strike against armored vehicles.
Fixed a bug where the Mortar Strike would fail to begin to reload.
Switching kits no longer instantly reloads the Mortar Strike.

Not sure if this still works, but in BC1 u you could use the repair tool to break down walls, and kill people. when you used it to break down a wall the effect was similar to shooting an rpg at it, a MASSIVE hole in the wall, it also kills faster than the knife which is odd...

ha ha this reminds me when I was first played as engineer in the beta I was running around with the drill and squizing the tigger to make the drill sound (just beening a dummy) and I ran up to a teamate ingame and drilled him from the back. Blood splattered but didnt kill him. That guy took a while to turn around and when he saw what I was doing. He took a few steps and looked at me like "WTF" :D He shot me a few rounds like "you asshat"

Tracer dart still = <3
Some footage I got over the weekend, plus the A10. GAU sounds sooooo sweet with this sound engine (and they actually got the sound correct) but speed of sound modeling is off.

Excellent vids of the Tracer Dart/RPG combo Jenan...:2thumbs:
You should do one w/ the RPG facing the other direction just for show...:D

Sorry Rand missed the other Mortar Strike fixes (all I knew was the binoculars bit) so your right about not being able to escape the blast if the damage is really high vs. armor. Guess is keeps armor from finding a really dominating camping spot and forces it to be on the move most of the time.

Yeah, you're probably right about the movement vs. camping intent Kurlon.
But the problem with that is that splash damage is almost completely missing from armor shots. There's only so many times you can drop a shell three feet from a guy and watch him wander away to hit you with his RPG before you're overwhelmed by him and his buddies.
I was tagged a few times yesterday, and it's definitely more effective than non-tracer shots, but it still isn't enough even with multiple shooters to bring down a good tanker. It would be plenty good enough for the average player though, or if the tanker got particularly aggressive and moved too close to manuver.
The one and only reliable way to take down a tank every time is with a direct mortar shot kill, and maybe if there is a hellfire upgrade for the Apache that could work also, but nobody has one yet that I've seen.
So you naysayers for tracers? You're wrong, sorry. They are incredibly useful for most situations. :p:twisted:
I wonder if I should post something in the beta forums about armor being too good (mortars too). I had about 8 engineers gunning for me at one point yesterday and they couldn't bring down the tank. Though at one point I had Lairs-ian level of teamwork with engies fixing me up after passing the first stage, and that helps a great deal.

If you do want to post something. Post it at http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-bad-company-2-pc-beta/ I seen DICE developers post a responds a few times so they are reading. The dont reply over the american forums. Just note that you may get call "whining, crying" from fanboys who cant accept that there are issues with the game.

Here we list some of the bugs which have been reported in the Closed Beta, with confirmed info from programmer, Mikael Kalms.
How is DICE working on the game?
Fixes are made directly in the retail game. Then, depending on how much time and effort it takes, we also lift the fixes into the Closed Beta. When we have a new good build of the Closed Beta, we will release a new client.
The focus for most of the team right now is stability, not game balancing. Therefore the list below contains mainly reported stability issues.
Flashing water and terrain on Crossfire
*Fixed in retail game.
Particle shadows disabled on SLI + DirectX9
*They used to cause a huge performance drop. Fixed in retail game.
DirectX9 crashes
*We have improved stability some in the retail game, particularly when "losing" the graphics device due to alt-tab
WinXP 32 / WinXP 64 compatibility
*We have done a few crash fixes, although we have no data specifically on XP64 yet.
Updater fails downloading patch and gives a nonsensical error message about "unable to download patch, check your internet connection"
*Fixed in the retail game. The problem is both in the game's installer and in the updater.
*Closed Beta workaround: launch the Updater as Administrator.
Some or all of WASD keys stop working
*If you have a joystick connected, and it is not perfectly calibrated, then it will signal tiny movements in some direction. These tiny movements overrule the WASD keys. We are aware of the problem.
*Closed Beta workaround: Disconnect your joystick
Crash during level load on ATI x1900 cards
*The game requires driver version 9.12 or later to function. 9.11 crashes hard inside the driver. Unfortunately there are no new enough drivers available for the X1900 cards.
*Closed Beta workaround: Rename BFBC2Game.exe to BF2.exe, and launch BF2.exe directly.
Sometimes you keep moving even after you have released a key
*Noted. We have reproduced it at the DICE office too.
*As a side note: this never happened to a single developer during the past 6 months' worth of testing. Strange.
"Connection to server has been lost"
*This one is tricky. We have no solution yet.
Some sounds are played in the wrong speaker
*Audio team are investigating.
Crackups in sound
*No data yet.
Weapon balancing and tuning
*When we created the first Closed Beta, we picked the most stable build we had. (Well, you have all seen how well that build fared when it faced the real world...) We had to choose either stability or new content -- and stability won. Due to this, all content in the Closed Beta was some weeks old already at launch.
*Weapon balancing is on-going in the retail game, and we are following what's happening on the forums.
HBAO is very GPU hungry, resulting in low framerates on high-end machines
*We are working on faster versions of the filter.
*Closed Beta workaround: disable HBAO. Looks less pretty, runs better.
The game has high framerate on a machine, yet the input is very laggy
*We have a fix in the works.
The game accepted my serial key, but then failed logging in to EA Online
*Are you having any exotic characters in your password? One person who had the character ?}? in his password had that very problem.
*Closed Beta workaround: Change your password (using EA Video Games - Electronic Arts (http://www.ea.com)) to a password that only contains the characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9. Then try logging in in the game again.
So, that is where we are at now.
We will try to keep this list updated every few days. Thanks for your feedback, everyone!
-kalms

Seconded. Game is too cluttered and vehicle dominated. Not to mention snipers aren't one shot kill.

I played on a 1/2 full server last night and had a really fun round. because of the low player count the map was much less chaotic and quite enjoyable. I think with some bigger maps and some balancing this game could be fun.
The lack of in game VOIP is still a deal breaker for me so I hope they get on it before the beta is over.

The half-full comment from Duke is telling: I've now played a large number of half full servers or down to about 10 guys at points. Far, FAR too many points for what is supposed to be a popular Beta product.
I have a very strong feeling the sales for this game for the PC are going to be very low. If they can't keep most servers full more or less non-stop within the first week of the beta release, that suggests problems.
Phantom--Vehicle dominated? Not at all. Far fewer vehicles here than in BF2. Granted, the T-90 is a heck of a lot harder to kill in the right hands, but by and large the vehicle count is lower than it should be for a Battlefield game, and unbalanced per side to boot on this map.

I really like the game! I'm sure they will fix the voip issue before release. A new map would be neat too!
I had a blast last night when I played. I got a head shot on a guy that was just getting ready to take off in the Apache chopper, jumped in and stole it then killed 3 tanks! It's gonna be a fun game...

Nope, I have mine pre-ordered at GameStop. Their Game Informer magazine review gave it a 9.5. I guess they got hold of a pre-release version. They were talking about how BC2 was going to take top spot back from Infinity Ward! :2thumbs:
