View Full Version : VOIP?

I just installed the game and played a round. I haven't had a chance to read anything on it yet so I am just going to ask. Is the VOIP working? I couldn't hear anybody or transmit.

I also notice that I had a bit of a stutter about the same time as a taunt would come through or with a sound effect like the jumps sound on the Manta. Sound I have my Open AL on?

A couple of answers [ that you already figured out for yourself :) ]

VOIP is mostly defective (unchanged since BETA demo). Many people have filtered out voices to reduce the annoyance; but I clearly hear players occasionally. I'm enjoying using text-to-speech. "GG" means "gee-gee" in robot speak.

http://www.tweakguides.com/UT3_6.html says to enable your Open AL.
"I recommend ticking this option if your sound card has its own OpenAL driver, which most do - check under \Windows\System32 for the file OpenAL32.dll."

It's great you got it going! Of course, fewer bots means lower scores for me.

Thanks for the reply. I did find the OpenAL file in my system32 folder. :2thumbs:

The lack of VOIP is a disappointment. How the heck are we supposed to get a community going with lousy VOIP. :|

I guess I will need to make a bunch of cool sounding macros for my keyboard.

I enabled OpenAL last night too. Makes quite a difference. I've heard a few people talk over VOIP, and i have done so myself. It didn't appear to be as bad as the beta, but it's still not perfect.

They added VOIP to ETQW in the last patch and it's the best quality in game voice I've encountered so far. Really clear and consistent. If UT3 gets voice chat anywhere near that good I'd be happy.

Don't feel bad, I didn't know it was there until Cain said "Hey Thrash!" About scared me out of my chair. :D

Too bad they couldn't release it with VOIP :(

Looks like Fluffy has been enjoying some EVE Online :2thumbs:

Nah the only good bit in eve was the face creator :D

o/ all

Re ETQW yeah it'd have been nice if they'd shipped with it in but as I understand it, it was removed after the beta as it wasn't working properly and they added it back asap.

What's worse... shipping with really bad voip that everyone turns off or shipping with none and adding really good voip a few weeks later that everyone thinks is great?

Epic has so much other stuff to fix in UT3 that by the time they get around to fixing voip (if they ever do) nobody will think to use it.

I don't know; VOIP is such a huge part of FPS games now, and UT in particular, that fixing that should probably take second priority to fixing the server browser. At least for the end users--I'm sure the server admins will want a quick fix that makes it a lot easier to set up and use servers and commands.

Ventrillo FTW!!!! I agree some sort of voip is necessary for well-planned attacks. We have a core group of folks using vent every night whether playing UT, COD4 or whatever. A separate voip like ventrillo or teamspeak allows not only for strategy but for the smacktalk that doesn't belong on the game voip :)

I didn't realize there was VOIP either. Other people on the server today were surprised also. A couple people tried it, it was all choppy, I didn't even bother trying to transmit.

I'm using integrated sound, Realtek ALC888 and I don't have an openal32.dll.

The VOIP thing is really disappointing particularly because the VOIP in 2k4 was so good out of the box. It's one of those things, like the server browser, where it seems like if they had just copied the code straight from 2k4 they would have gotten a better result and saved a lot of money too.

Two voice programs at once are too annoying (in-game and external). I just want the in-game VOIP. I can live with a terrible server browser--for now. With just 70 Warfare servers it's easy to find Cain's Lair. But VOIP is essential.

I can use TS or Vent, but I find them annoying for various reasons aside from the problem of two voice programs.

P.S. I completely disabled in-game VOIP in the Beta Demo after some asshat was being annoying. I'm not quite at that point now just because VOIP works even less now than in the Beta, which says something considering how poor it was/is.

I would prefer that they address the crashing issues first. Meeeeeep!
