View Full Version : Great-Great Grandma Virginias Shrimp Gumbo and Season/spicy Crackers

Great during holidays or whenever, but mostly on christmas :)
Shrimp Gumbo
3/4cup of canola oil
17 tablespoons of flour
2 cups of chopped onions and green onions
2 cups of chopped celery
7 cups of water
salt and pepper as needed
2 quarts of shrimp
add oil in large pan add flour a little at a time, continue to stir until flour is a golden brown, 15 to 30 minutes at this point it becomes ROUX.
add onions and celery in roux stir well.
add hot water and stir. cook on low heat for 1/2 hour.
add salt and pepper and greek seasoning to taste-all purpose greek seasoning (cavenders)
add shrimp(deer sausage,crab,chicken etc...)and cook for 15 minutes
stir occasionally.
Season/Spicy Crackers
1 box of fat free crackers
1 cup of canola oil
1 package of ranch dressing (powder)
2 tablespoons of garlic powder
1 tablespoon of crushed red pepper
1 tespoon of black pepper
1 tespoon of red pepper
mix in a big bowl and place in plastic bag

yum yum, that sounds so good. I haven't had some good gumbo in quite a few years .:D

ya my great great grandmother is no longer living so the recipe was passed for my grandma to my dad to my mom and then to me im going to make it sometime on a holiday maybe even my birthday and i dont want any help at all:D

I will give this one a try this weekend. I will probably tweak the recipe a bit and use some local chicken sausage and put the shrimp in last.

Maybe I should have said boiling pot of beer. That's what the gourmets do. :D

(6 pepper blend is what is used the brand we use is called Durkee)
this is for the 1 tablespoon of crushed pepper

if it says 'Instant' I can cook it. lol. but in all honesty, I'm a pretty good chef. one question, why no Okra in the gumbo?
