How to make emoticons on other PHP forums?

So I'm helpin this guy build a good forum right, and the smilies are the standard "blah" ones.. lol
I want to know how to insert stuff like :D and :) :( :shock: :? :oops: :P :twisted: :roll: :wink: :cry: 8) :o :pissed: :| :2thumbs: :?:

They're image files. Usually you copy them to a specific directory for the forum. What that directory is differs depending on what software for forums your using. The next step is usually defining what symbol calls what smiley image. thats usually done in the forums control panel.
